The Bridge
It had been an unrelenting journey. We’d cowered from the savage rage of milky-topped mountains; endured the critical eye of rustling ash and quizzical oak, stared into the glare of petrified deer and frantic fox as salmon leapt in grand salute and toads on stools stood in watchful unison.
Choice was for the privileged. Ours was none. The Bridge was all. We prayed with tears as every tumbling waterfall, surge of spray and scurrying rivulet streamed us ever closer. Truth drifted towards us with its fragrant allure. Then it was there.
Regal in authority.
Ancient in wisdom.
Quiet in strength underfoot.
Now we would survive.

life deserves decisions
each person finds where truth exists
seek your own true bridge

  1. Oh, I like where you went with this haibun! Seizing the ‘brambled path of truth” seems to be the best, though not the easiest, choice! Walking that path may not be easy, but may be most rewarding!

  2. I like that the background to this journey remains a mystery. It makes your haibun all the more powerful. The path of truth often feels like a brambled one indeed.

  4. This makes me think of The Hunger Games.

I LOVE this section: “We’d cowered from the deceptively savage rage of milky-headed mountains; endured the critical eye of rustling ash and quizzical oak.”

And this: “The Bridge was all. Every tumbling waterfall, scurrying its offspring to stream and rivulet us ever to the answer; ancient, true and eternal.”

  6. Truly a wonderful interpretation, love how you worked with the image as a metaphor… and used it all throughout the prose.

There is a strong symbolism in the bridge I think,

  9. I specially admire this line:

Choice lie only with the privileged. Our choice; uncompromising, was to seize the brambled path of truth.

And the ending note, very strong and uplifting ~ Thanks for joining our Haibun Monday ~
