Bodhirose has set the challege of a Rondel for d’Verse Poet’s Pub
for England. for a son
manipulation reigned
an English maiden tamed
this history begun
sacred laws undone
a regal country stained
for England. for a son
manipulation reigned
rejoice ye, everyone
for Anne, a queen ordained
no sons! a queen detained
an execution won
for England. for a son
A little historical twist here. But how sad. The repetition of the form worked well.

Enjoyed this! Well executed rondel. But wondered why the execution. Not sure of the history involved.

Hi Mary, it was Henry 111V and Anne Boleyn. He had her falsely accused of adultery and beheaded because she could not give him the son he craved. He had 6 wives in all! His life is fascinating yet barbaric story.

Well done, even though a horrid reign he ran; was it the Vth or VIII?

Interesting how you broke up the lines from a traditional rondel, Shirley, but it works well. Henry the VIII seemed a very insecure king who suffered from low self-worth!

He got a lot worse after a jousting accident in 1536 when he was 44. They suspect a personality changing brain damage.

I couldn’t remember the whole story but, was thinking she was beheaded. Thanks for a bit of history in this one.

I like how you changed the stanzas around.. for me it accentuated the sad rise and fall of Anne Boleyn… (which is the story behind your poem I read)… Like summarizing Wolf Hall.

I recognised the history, as I love to read about the Tudors. I agree that your variation to the standard versification works beautifully.
