Laura at dVerse Poets Pub has given us the prompt of a Palinode. This will be the opposite sentiments to a poem previously written. Also, we can tell lies!

When I die
I shall not die

my body, frail
and failing
yes
surrendering to time’s request
will leave

and yet the ‘I’ I am
will blossom forth
continuing with love
the love that never leaves
the love we know in memories
in every moment shared
the love that waits
in timeless bliss
eternally
in heaven’s kiss

when I die
I shall not die

When I die I’ll haunt you, dear.
I’ll be the growling in your ear.
I’ll be the door that slams quite shut
for no apparent reason, but
you’ll wonder if it was the breeze
though after twenty times you’ll see
It’s me! It’s me! The one you teased, tormented daily. Never pleased.
Berated me with constant stern.
Told me I would never learn.
Criticised my every deed.
Stabbed my heart and watched it bleed.
So now you get the saucers flying,
bugs on crumpets multiplying.
Shaking bed in dead of night,
waking nightmares dark with fright.
My passing’s not your happy release.
I’ll give you not a minutes peace.
When I die you WILL regret
and curse the day we ever met.

  1. I loved both poems and you made much of the Palinode’s reversal in the love poem vs the vengeful one who was evidently going to haunt the narcissist

“the love that never leaves” – what a beautiful statement

  2. Oh well done! The tenderness of love in one set on fire by the bitterness in the other. Loved

    “the love that waits
    in timeless bliss
    eternally
    in heaven’s kiss”

    and the rhyming force of

“Shaking bed in dead of night,
    waking nightmares dark with fright.
My passing’s not your happy release.
I’ll give you not a minutes peace.”

  3. What a stark contrast between the two… the right one is very stern, and feels like that of someone unable to let go… the other to go an but wait beyond. Well done
