I-scream

They reach in and take
your heart
with an easy hand.

We didn’t know about
narcissists
in those days
so we married them
as eagerly as kids
running
to an ice-cream van.

It was
the bright colours
the smiling eyes
the cheeky grin
the anticipation
why
most of us ended up
crushed
under a bus.
