Raw and incomparable pain
Forced you screaming into this night.
You fought with all your infant might
For safety in darkness again.

In shocked deliverance you lay,
New and bloodied like a small bird.
Your first breath sweeter than any word,
You took mine completely away.

In your newborn face, creased red-blue,
There craved the hand of mother-touch.
If my heart had felt this much
Before, it would have sung to you.

I gathered you close to my breast
And bathed in your newborn softness.
Calmed now, the spent lioness
Drifts contentedly to sweet rest.

~~~~~~~~~~~~
Tonight you are my whispered dream.
Tomorrow I shall breathe your smell
And touch your skin, while you compel
Me ever to this love supreme.
  2. I love this, and can really feel the intense love for your newborn baby in this… I also love the way you paint the struggle in the first stanza of the struggle to go back into the darkness…
  3. Your poem resonates with me, Shirley, although the birth of my daughter nearly forty-four years ago has faded in my memory. Nature is great for making is forget the pain, so that we’ll go through it all again, isn’t she? I like the rhyme scheme in this poem, and especially love the lines:
    ‘Your first breath sweeter than any word,
    You took mine completely away’
    and
    ‘Calmed now, the spent lioness
    Drifts contentedly to sweet rest.’
    1. Hi Kim
      Thank you, yes, I’ve done it 3 times and I can’t say any of them were a poetic delight, but hindsight is a wonderful, sugar-coated thing!
      OOPS! edited to say, I didn’t mean the kids – just the experience!
    1. Thank you, Brendan,
      I could have made it a shorter poem…
      ‘the end justifies the means’
      but you know what poets are like!
  8. Giving birth is such a unique and spectacular miracle. I wish that every child born could receive the kind of love you have expressed in your poem. Beautiful.
  9. Perfectly titled. There are many new beginnings, many things are born at a baby’s birth.
